About the Hospital
A National Medical Center With Global Reach
Zhejiang University First Hospital (浙江大学医学院附属第一医院, commonly known as 浙大一院) was founded in 1947 by Professor Zhu Kezhen, then President of Zhejiang University, with Professor Wang Jiwu as its first director. It was Zhejiang University's first affiliated hospital and has grown into a National Medical Center — one of the highest designations a Chinese hospital can achieve.
The hospital is globally recognised for organ transplantation — it is one of the most comprehensive multi-organ transplant centres in China, routinely performing liver, kidney, heart, lung, pancreas, and small intestine transplants, including combined and domino procedures. It performed the world's first domino liver-small intestine transplant and the world's first COVID-19 lung transplant in an elderly patient. The infectious disease department, led by Academician Li Lanjuan, is the National Clinical Research Center for Infectious Diseases and played a pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic. The haematology programme, led by Academician Zheng Shusen, is a national leader in blood cancers and CAR-T therapy.
For international patients, the International Health Centre at the hospital's main campus occupies 20,000 square metres with dedicated multilingual staff, bilingual documentation, and partnerships with 20 international insurance companies. The hospital has trained health professionals from 96 countries, giving it one of the most globally connected clinical networks in Chinese medicine. For patients requiring organ transplantation, complex haematological care, or infectious disease management at the highest level, this is one of China's premier destinations.
"A National Medical Center where organ transplantation, infectious disease control, and haematology meet global excellence — with a 20,000m² International Health Centre to serve overseas patients."
Why Patients Choose
Three reasons to consider Zhejiang University First Hospital
World-Leading Organ Transplantation Programme
Zhejiang University First Hospital is one of the most experienced multi-organ transplant centres in China, covering liver, kidney, heart, lung, pancreas, and small intestine. It has performed multiple global firsts in combined and domino transplantation. For patients with end-stage organ failure who need a transplant, this is one of China's strongest options.
National Medical Center Authority
The National Medical Center designation places this hospital in China's top tier of medical institutions, alongside Beijing's PUMCH and Shanghai's Ruijin. Its academic leadership — with Academicians Li Lanjuan and Zheng Shusen — means its clinical guidelines and research inform national practice. For complex or rare conditions requiring the highest level of specialist expertise, this designation provides independent validation of clinical quality.
Global Clinical Network
Having trained health professionals from 96 countries, the hospital has a built-in global network of clinical partners and alumni. It has treated patients from across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe through its International Health Centre. This experience translates into practical competence in managing the logistics and communication needs of cross-border care.
